Night Shift Inpatient Pharmacist – Acute Care Hospital (7-On/7-Off, Alabama Region)
Overview
A large regional acute care hospital in the Alabama area is seeking an experienced Night Shift Inpatient Pharmacist for a 16-week contract assignment. This role supports high-volume overnight pharmacy operations and provides clinical dosing expertise across neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations. The position requires strong clinical decision-making skills, proficiency with sterile compounding, and the ability to work independently during night shifts. Key Responsibilities
- Verify, prepare, and dispense medications accurately and safely
- Perform pharmacokinetic dosing and therapeutic drug monitoring
- Manage dosing for anticoagulants, cardiac medications, high-alert drugs, pediatrics, geriatrics, renal adjustments, and warfarin
- Participate in interdisciplinary communication and provide real-time clinical support
- Prepare sterile IV admixtures in accordance with regulatory standards
- Utilize automated dispensing systems (e.g., Pyxis or similar) for medication distribution
- Review medication profiles to ensure clinical appropriateness and safety
- Support medication management for high-acuity patient populations
- Maintain thorough documentation within the electronic health record
- Follow hospital, state, and federal regulations for medication handling and controlled substances
- Participate in orientation and competency modules as required
Qualifications
- Active pharmacist license in the state of practice (or eligibility to obtain)
- Minimum 2 years of recent inpatient hospital pharmacy experience
- IV certification required
- Strong clinical dosing experience, including high-acuity and specialized populations
- Ability to work consecutive night shifts (7-on/7-off schedule)
- COVID-19 vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions allowed)
- Flu vaccination required
- Experience with EMR systems and automated dispensing cabinets preferred
- PharmD preferred but not required
- Professional references and updated resume required
Work Environment & Schedule
Sixteen-week contract in a large acute care hospital serving the Alabama region. Night shift schedule: 20:00–06:30, 7 nights on / 7 nights off, with every other weekend included in rotation. No on-call requirements. Includes mandatory orientation modules.
